ACC Officiating Leaves A Lot To Be Desired
- Updated: October 20, 2013
I can say without any trouble that I am no expert in ACC Football and I do not have years of watching this conference and their teams. What I do have is the first 6 weeks of the season this year. And so far, the officiating in the ACC Conference leaves a lot to be desired.
I used to think that the Big East Officials were average at best and they over called many games. Big East officials had nothing on these guys. There have been some occasions this season that the officials have truly thought they were the real story on the field.
There is holding on every play, but it is not called every play. There is pass interference on most passing plays that go down field, but for the most part it is not called. At least until this season. I have seen on average 3-5 pass interference calls in each of the ACC games I have watched this season. I watch every Pitt game, but not just in those games am I seeing these calls. In last nights Clemson game, there were more than a few suspect calls and even some no calls that I take exception too.
Consistency is important in every profession and in every sport. Every person on this planet sees everything a little different so there will always be human error. That said, being consistent is important and the inconsistent calling of plays is making this years college football almost unwatchable. I never thought I would ever say that, but I find myself turning games off and looking for other shows to watch.
I love college football and in years past I would stay up all hours to watch it and it did not matter who it was, Air Force, BYU, Southern Cal, Oregon, New mexico…etc. It just did not matter. I now find myself so disgusted with not just ACC officiating but all officials that it is really hard for me to do that now.
I write about the Panthers every week and watch or listen to every game. The Panthers were winning yesterday and I found myself turning the game off looking around. There was plenty of action but it was just so long and over officiated that I just struggled mightily watching it. The crew that called that game last night needs to be looked at closer and even broken up and paired up with different officials going forward as they can not be allowed to do that again. I am certainly not saying that the game was a masterpiece, but when a game is going in that direction, at some point the flags just need to become harder to throw and let the kids play.
